PHYS/CHEM Requirements + Transfer Credits

Physics/Chemistry Requirements

Below are the most common courses that CSD students take to complete their physics and chemistry requirements. As noted below, PHYS 121 is one of the most popular with CSD majors as it has aspects that can be crossed over into Audiology. These courses are the ones that are available for all majors to take. Please note that most Graduate Schools do not accept ISCI courses due to ASHA Guidelines. A course title with PHYS or CHEM is what is needed for requirements.

  • PHYS 121. The Physical Nature of Light and Sound (includes lab)
  • Most CSD majors take this course
  • Has aspects of sound that can assist with knowledge for Audiology
  • PHYS 140. College Physics I (PHYS 140L required lab corequisite)*
  • PHYS 215. Energy and the Environment*
  • Prerequisites: One college course in science and one in mathematics.
  • PHYS 240. University Physics I*
  • MATH 232 or MATH 235 is the corequisite.
  • * means math and/or science prereq or coreq

Transfer Credits

Many students try to take courses over the summer for a variety of reasons, a big one is that certain schools are closer to home or the course is cheaper. Listed below are some course equivalents for some schools that JMU students may transfer their credits from. If you do not see your course here, please click on the links provided as most schools have extensive lists.  For any course, it is always good to double check with the university's registrar office.

Transferring Grades or Quality Points
You will earn credit for all transferable courses in which you have earned a grade of "C" or better, but your grade point average for those courses does not transfer to your JMU record. Your JMU cumulative grade point average is calculated only based on grades earned for course work completed at JMU.  Please review your undergraduate catalog for the year in which you first enrolled at JMU to see how transfer credit and corresponding grades apply to JMU graduation honors.

Nontransferable Credits
The following courses are not transferable:
  • Terminal courses that are generally technical and vocational in nature
  • Remedial and sub-college courses that are usually taken to remove a high school deficiency or to remedy inadequate preparation for college-level work in a specific discipline
  • Courses in which a comparable discipline is not available at JMU
  • Most 300-or 400-level courses offered at JMU that were taken at the 100 or 200 level at a community college (there are a few exceptions)
  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP) courses, departmental and school examinations for credit.

  • Not actually available to all majors
  • From MyMadison: Nursing, Health Science and Athletic Training, and Pre-OT majors only.

  • CHEM 131. General Chemistry I (CHEM 131L required lab corequisite)
  • Not available to all majors
  • From MyMadison: Health Sci, Dietetics, Biology, Biophysical Chem, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biotech, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, Engineering, Nursing Majors & Pre-Med, Pre-Pharm, Pre-Dent,Pre-Opt,Pre-PA,Pre-PT,Pre-Vet,Pre-OT, Environ Management or SEEDs
